Velvet Hair Scrunchies

I found some Dark Red Velvet, and I just fell for it.

This should probably be easier than I’m experiencing.

Please be advised, Velvet is a very delicate fabric.  I’m learning about it by watching videos and reading on blogs.

My advice is take your time by using a close stitch and stitching slowly because the fabric moves very easily.

Here’s what I use for the scrunchie:

  • Dark Red Velvet cut into 4 inch x 21 to 22 inches strips.  Note: I recommend 4 1/2 inches wide or more for ease of making.
  • Matte Silver Sequins Elastic from a roll or card
  • 1/4″ Elastic cut into 6 to 7 inch strips for inside
  • Stick Pins
  • Dark Red Thread
  • E6000 Adhesive
  • Sewing Machine with Walking Foot.  I’m using my Brother SQ9185.  Great starter machine.  I love it๐Ÿ’Ÿ.  The SQ9185 looks like it was discontinued but a newer version exists meow Brother XR9550.

I’m making quite of few of these.

I start by using the E6000 and adhering the Silver Sequin Strip to the center of the right side of the Red Velvet.

Let it dry completely.

Next, fold Red Velvet in half right or good sides in with sequin strip in center.

Get your machine lower bobbin made and in place and thread the upper needle.  I read to use the larger plastic disc at the end of a smaller thread bobbin with a little room so the bobbin can move.  That means the larger the thread bobbin the smaller the end disc.

Remember, start with a close straight stitch from end to end.  Take your time with it.

I try to hurry through and I always end up screwing up.  Here’s what happened on my 1st sewn scrunchie.

I was trying to turn it right side out and my seam started to rip open.  Remember “Delicate”!  So, I go to my machine and turn my top wheel back to a #1 tension setting and resew at slow speed.

Next, I need to turn the scrunchie right side out.  Start at one end with your fingers and slowly work it until it’s right side out.  I used an ink pen and gently pulled the inside outward.  It was a little more difficult that I attached a Sequin strip. I used my fingers to work it right side out after I did a few.

As you can see, velvet will create a lot of fuzzy dust and strings.  Be careful that your sewing machine doesn’t try to eat them while you are stitching.  They can clog up your feed.

Once all were finished, I used a lint roller on them.
